Pluses Of Your Local Farmers Market
It's that wonderful time of year when the local Farmers
Markets begin to show up near you.
If you haven't been a supporter of them here's a few reasons
to consider.
Liven Your
Taste Buds
Did you know that the average distance food in the U.S.
travels to reach your dinner plate is 1,500 miles? That also mean the ripening process and shelf
life is already an average of 2 weeks by the time it hits your local grocery
store.
That time off the vine or out of the ground means that much
of the original flavor is lost.
Rediscover how your fruits and vegetables are supposed to
taste by getting the freshest and tastiest available at your local farmers
market.
Buy Local
While this principle is true for any small business small
family owned farms struggle to compete in an increasingly global complex
economy. When you shop local it's a boost to your local economy as more of the
money circulates locally to your friends, family and community members
benefits.
Planet
Friendly
I could dedicate an entire article on the many economic and
environmental factors in shopping with local farmers. Less diesel fuel, less packaging, less harmful chemicals and preservatives are
just a few of the many planet friendly advantages of shopping locally.
It's The
Nutrients, Dah?
This point is another one I'm passionate about. When I got
the surprise scare of my life with colon related cancer diagnosis several years
ago I dove into researching how a non-smoker, occasional social drinker,
distance runner could get cancer. What I came out with was the shocking
realization our entire Western culture is largely well fed (Some could well
argue overfed) but we are sadly starved nutritionally without realizing its
harmful consequences.
Turns out our cells require nutrients to stave off the bad
cells and foster healthy cellular functions that keep us away from cancer and
things like heart disease.
Unfortunately
our "advanced" food production and distribution system have given us
oranges in January at grocery stores everywhere but at a steep cost. The sharp decline of the healthy nutrients
our bodies need to stay and age healthy is much less than a generation ago and
is a factor on most age related diseases like cancer.
Buying from local farmers or growing your own food is THE
best and most affordable way to put more great tasting and healthy food into
your body.
We spotlight the many advantages of supporting your local
farmer's market in the kickoff of our latest video.
